“Himalayan Style” presents a treasury of images by noted photographer Thomas L. Kelly, accompanied by Claire Burkert’s insightful prose. This 304-page book engages readers both familiar with and new to the Himalayas. In over 600 superb photographs of architecture and crafts in Bhutan, India, Nepal and Tibet, Kelly provides a close-up look at the hand-created beauty in this stunning region. It is a book with a mission: Burkert emphasizes the urgent need to keep the rich heritage of Himalayan design alive. In a special foreword, acclaimed Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman calls attention to the spiritual foundations of Himalayan aesthetics. The vibrant last section of “Himalayan Style” celebrates contemporary expressions of style in the Kathmandu valley.
A former Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal, Thomas L. Kelly is renowned for his photography of Himalayan communities. Titles of his books include Kathmandu: City on the Edge of the World, Hidden Himalayas, and Tibet: Reflections from the Wheel of Life. Claire Burkert founded the Janakpur Women’s Development Center, an NGO devoted to Nepal’s Maithili women and their arts, and has worked as an advisor to artisan projects in Tibet, Bhutan, and elsewhere in Asia.
