Sand Mandala at Chiwong Monastery.

The Mandala is carefully constructed, grain by grain, from coloured sand; and intricate and symbolic design that takes many days to complete. The protective dagger deities are placed around the Mandala and the bone of rilbu pills (spiritual medicine) is placed above the center. The Mandala becomes the palace of Garwang Thoje Chenpo, the lord of the dance; he is an emanation of the Buddha of compassion and is the central deity of Mani Rimdu. His mantra; OM AH HUNG HRI OM MANI PADME HUNG is repeated thousand of times by the monks during the week of ceremonies which precede the public festival. During their meditation the monks visualize all the compassion flowing in the form of the mantra into the Mandala and the rilbu pills. From the Mandala the compassion radiates out, blessing all those who come to Chiwong. Solu Khumbu, Nepal.

Taa Dzong

Taa Dzong in Trongsa was the first major building in Bhutan to undergo a renovation that brings new architectural concepts to an otherwise preserved traditional space. Built in 1652, Taa Dzong sits on a steep hill overlooking Trongsa Dzong and the river valleys to the south and west. During times of war and intrigue, it was traditional to build such watchtowers to protect a dzong. In more recent times, Taa Dzong had become home to two hermit monks who tended the two lakhangs inside. Now a museum of Buddhism and the Monarchy named the Tower of Trongsa, it still shelters two active lakhangs. Bhutan.
