Gabra Nomad of Chalbi Desert. Kenya.
. Water is one of the critical elements for survival in the desert. At a "singing well" water is passed in a giraffe skin container, 'okole', and poured into through of molded mud from which the animals drink. The well is an important place for Gabbra social interaction, organized around traditional water-extraction methods. Foreign-aid workers are promoting windmill power for pumping water and sealing the wells for sanitary reasons. This makes life more difficult for the Gabbra. Due to their nomadic existence, a permanent installation does not make sense.
