Maitreya Temple Basgo , A world Heritage Site. (at 1463 meters)
The Maitreya temple of Basgo has been recognized as world's 100 most endangered Heritage site for the year 2000-2001 by the World Monument Fund USA. This particular site is one of the most historically adorn and prominent site in Ladakh from 1445-1650 AD. the famous castle of Basgo Rabrtans Lharise Khar is now in complete ruined state, however there exist three Maitreya temple in varying sizes and importance. the patrons of these temple are:
1-CHAMBA (Maitreya) TEMPLE: The Patron of the Maitreya image of clay was the King Drakspa Bumlde in (C. 1450-1490) . Colourful fresco paintings were carried out during the The reign of King Tsewang Namgyal (C. 1580-1600)
2-SERZANG TEMPLE: Building of copper guilt Maitrey image was thought started during the reign of King Jamyang Namgal in (C. 1600-1615) but could have been complete by King Singge Namgyal in 1622 AD. Many important religious books like Kangur and Strangus written in five precious colour has been preserved in this temple.
3-CHAMCHUNG TEMPLE: This temple is built by Balji Prince Gyal Khatun, the King Jamyan Namgya in (C, 1600-1615). It was built in the shape of the Mosque but later converted to Maitrey temple when she embarged Buddhism is almost on the verge of collapse. The Basgo Welfare Committee A Social organization of this village comprised a dedicated group of voluntary workers take the responsibility of preservation of this historic site under the active guidance of the Tibetan classic translator. Guild of New York, USA. Hemis Monastery owns the main Chamba Temple and Serzang Temple is owned by Basgo Village.
