Shey Palace
Shey Palace, Leh (Ladakh)
Shey Palace, including Shrine together with adjacent land (Shey Palace) (Lat: 34-10'N, Long: 77-35'E) 15 kilometers to the south upstream from Leh. The monastery is located on the hillock east of Leh Town on Leh-Manali road.
The Royal Palace and Shrine build in 16th century A.D. enshrines the Du-Khang with the copper gilded statue of Lord Buddha rising to a height of three storeyed. King Deldan Namgyal build the Palace around 1650A.D. The Palace has the largest Namgyal Chorten (Victory stupa) in Ladakh, the top of which is made of pure gold. The Royal family shifted to Stok Palace in 1834 A.D
The three storeyed Palace has 7.5 m statue of seated Sakyamuni Buddha copper and brass plated with gold, silver studded with gems and precious stones. perhaps there isno other statues of this kind any where in Ladakh.
